Hiking /Walking & Trail Running
Experience the trails in a different season

Take a Hike!
No really! Many of our winter ski and snowshoe trails are open and maintained for hiking, walking, or trail running in the summer! The snowshoe trails offer a more rustic single track feel with a narrower width and rocks and roots to keep things interesting.
Ski Trail Routes
Many of our ski trails are mowed and maintained frequently for summer use. Explore the most scenic areas of the park on these wide and level trails. Wander past the babbling Yukon Creek, through towering stands of white pines, view the expansive wetland vistas, and look for wildflowers and birds along the wide variety of habitat types. Ski trails are color coded for difficulty on trail maps and signs:
- Green colored trails are mostly flat to gently rolling
- Blue colored trails are intermediate with some steeper hills
- Black colored trails have the steepest terrain
Please note that all these trails are also open to Biking and a few areas also overlap with the Squirrel Hill Disc Golf Course.
Snowshoe Trail Routes
Almost all of our winter snowshoe trails are open in the summer as well! Since these trails feature a more undulating and natural surface with rocks and roots, they are great options for those looking for a more rustic adventure. They are minimally maintained throughout the summer and are marked with color coded tree markers. Choose these trails for solitude and adventure.

Trail Access
To access the trails, park at the lot outside the main gate near the information kiosk. Follow the paved road uphill from the kiosk to access the west side of the park, or head around the red gate and down the road towards the Chalet to access the east side of the park.
Dog Policy
Leashed dogs are welcome on all the trails. Please pick up after your pets. Pet waste disposal bins and bags are located at the trailhead. Thank you!
Must See Trail Highlight
Short on time? Check out the Squirrel Hill Overlook for an unparalleled view of the Northwoods. At the summer use parking area, take the paved road uphill from the kiosk. Keep following the paved road uphill as it winds its way to the top where you will emerge underneath the historic Squirrel Hill Fire Lookout Tower. Take a break at one of the benches at the overlook and watch for soaring eagles and ospreys. This route is paved and stroller friendly for narrow side by side strollers, however be prepared for a long steep ascent and descent.
