10:30 AM – Xtreme Mud Run
Test your wits and mosquito-swatting skills on our timed trail running race, the Muggy Buggy 5K. After an awards ceremony for the top overall and age class male and female finishers, strut your stuff in our Xtreme Mud Run. The 2.5km course traverses our highest hills, deepest swamps, and buggiest marshes. Awards are given to the top three overall male and female finishers as they complete the course.
The whole event wraps up well before noon, ensure you have the majority of the afternoon and event to cerebrate the holiday parades and fireworks!
Update #5: Bib pick-up & late registration will open at 8:00 AM Saturday, July 4. Please arrive at least 30 minutes before your race begins.
Update #4: Online registration has been extended to 5:00 PM on Friday, July 3! Registration and bib pick-up is also available for your convenience in-person at the Minocqua Area Chamber of Commerce, 1:00 PM – 4:30 PM, on Friday, July 3. Early bib pick-up is not required. Day-of-race registration is available until 30 minutes before each race!

The Muggy Buggy is a series of trail running races held at Minocqua Winter Park:
- 5.15 km Muggy Buggy Fun Run
- 2.5 km Muggy Buggy Xtreme Mud Run
All participants running on their own two legs must be at least 5 years-old on Race Day.
Muggy Buggy 5k – 9:00 AM
Can you outrun the deer-flies and the mosquitos? The Muggy Buggy Fun Run 5K Run/Walk, is a soft surface trail run/walk through the rolling landscape and boreal forest around Squirrel Hill at Minocqua Winter Park. The 5.15 km (3.2 mile) traverses a spectacular course encompassing eskers, hills, and forest pathways. The course follows the renowned ski trails on our Cookie Loop with one shortcut on Red Pine ski trail.
The Muggy Buggy 5K has male and female divisions with 10-year age classes:
- 8 & Under, 9-13, 14-19, 20-29, 30-39, 40-49, 50-59, 60-69, 70+
Muggy Buggy X – 10:30 AM
The Xtreme version of Muggy Buggy to be held shortly after the “sissy” version is completed. This race will include serious ups and downs, mud, creeks, ponds, more mud, a variety of obstacles, hot lava pits with fire breathing dragons, and other assorted odds and ends to shake things up a bit over a 2.5km (1.5 mile) course. Despite it’s relatively speaking short distance, this will be a tough event – quite possibly the toughest event you’ll ever do under 3km! Don’t wear your “Sunday Best” Do wear your War Paint! Either way, you’ll have a ball and we’ll have a hose to clean you up aprés X.
The Muggy Buggy Xtreme has elite male and female divisions plus an open division:
- The Elite waves are for the fastest, muddiest harriers around. Each of the Elite wave will be capped at 35 runners. Placement is limited to the first 25 males and 25 females who register before Race Day. An additional 10 spaces in each Elite wave are reserved for the first 10 male and the first 10 female finishers of the 2015 Muggy Buggy 5K!
- All other participants may choose their own wave in the non-scored Open division. Each of the Open waves will be capped at 50 runners. Coordinate your wave choice with your friends and family!
Enter Both Races!
After sweating it out on the Muggy Buggy 5k, stretch your legs and clense your skin with a refreshing mud bath in the Muggy Buggy X!
Commemorative Bandanas – The first 300 registrants will receive a commemorative cotton bandana. If you’re running the Xtreme race, you’ll need it!
Bugs, Bugs, and More Bugs – All registrants get their pick of stick-on bug tattoos, bug pencils, bug toys, bug jewelry, and more!
Cookout – All registrants receive fresh fruit, water, energy drink, choice of soda or beer (IDs checked at registration), and choice of grilled brat, burger, or veggie burger.
On-the-Course – Both the 5K and X races have aid stations with water.
First Aid – Members of the Minocqua Winter Park chapter of the National Ski Patrol provide great first aid and first response.
Post Mud-Run Showers – We’ll have several stations with hoses and rubber mats where you can rinse off and safely change into sandals after your mud run. Bring your own towel!
Shoe Collection – If you’d prefer to leave your Xtreme Mud Run shoes behind, please toss them in of our collection bins. Muddy shoes in good condition will be washed and donated to a local charity.
A Good Cause – Proceeds of the Muggy Buggy support the mission of our Town park to provide a quality silent sports experience for families and athletes. Our non-profit organization offers scholarships in our youth skier development program and free ski lessons to local residents. Come back during the snow season to enjoy our cross-country ski and snowshoe trails, snow tubing run, and ice skating pond!
Registration is open by mail until June 15, online until 11:59 PM on July 2, and in-person at the Minocqua Area Chamber of Commerce, 1:00 PM – 4:30 PM, Friday, July 3. Late registration is available on Race Day at the Minocqua Winter Park chalet, but please arrive at least 30 minutes before your race begins.

The Muggy Buggy will be held rain or shine. The event will be cancelled in the event of lightning or other severe weather.
Official timing and scoring will be conducted by *Ready*Set*Go* and a dedicated group of volunteers, many of them with scientific research and athletic race backgrounds. They are well-trained to take precise, accurate records of participant finishing times, and they understand the importance of delivering race results quickly.
Muggy Buggy 5K
Trophies will be given to the top three male and female division finishers. Age class awards will be given to the top three male and female finishers in each class. Division winners are ineligible for age class awards.
Muggy Buggy X
Trophies will be given to the first there male and first three female finishers. If you want a Muggy Buggy Xtreme trophy, you’ll want to be in an Elite wave!
