Take the blubber challenge! Ski or snowshoe out to the Nature Shelter (on the corner of X-C Express and Nepco’s Cruise) and learn the different ways Northwoods animals have adapted to survive the winter.

Join us for an enchanting evening ski that is lit by close to 300 luminaries! This easy 4 km out-and-back trail follows the first half of the Cookie Loop. Take in the warmth of a campfire at the Nature Shelter and enjoy hot beverages and sweet treats. This is a free event, donations appreciated.

January events

Celebrate our majestic Northwoods trees! Ski along the 2 km Bunny Trail and learn winter tree ID, trace history through the life of a tree, and play some tree-related games!

Join us for an enchanting evening snowshoe hike that is lit by close to 300 luminaries! Hike to the Wolf’s Den Shelter and take in the warmth of a bonfire while enjoying hot beverages and sweet treats. Two trail segments will be illuminated: head up Mt. Goat to the top of Squirrel Hill for an amazing view or take the flatter route along Snow Stomper for views of Yukon Creek. This is a free program, donations appreciated.

Join Ron Schultz of the Timber Wolf Alliance for an evening all about wolves. We’ll start inside the Chalet with a presentation then hike out on the trails to howl for our resident wolves. Plan on being outside for about an hour. Please dress for the weather and bring snowshoes and a headlamp or flashlight if you want. This is a rare chance to experience Winter Park at its most secretive time.

Ski the 2 km Bunny Trail and test your animal tracking skills. Use the clues at each station and guess which Northwoods animal they belong to. Use your new found skills to identify which other animals are sharing our trails.

The DNR’s free fishing weekend is Jan 19-20! Play a round of the matching card game Go Fish while skiing along the 2 km Bunny Trail and learn some fun fish facts along the way.

Celebrate traditional games along the 2 km Bunny Trail. Try your hand at giant jenga, kubb, quoits, and more!

Don’t be afraid, or maybe just a little. Ski or snowshoe to the Nature Shelter (on the corner of X-C Express and Nepco’s Cruise) and guess which skeletal remains and other “parts” belong to our non-human Winter Park residents.

Courtney Wright of the Northwoods Wildlife Center will bring some feathered friends along to help us appreciate these magnificent predators of the night. The program will begin with her presentation about owls and then, at dusk, we will head out on the trails with a guide to “hoot” for our resident owls. Plan on being outside for about an hour. Please dress for the weather and bring a headlamp or flashlight if you want. This is a rare chance to experience Winter Park at its most secretive time.

Celebrate the Birkebeiner warrior’s famous trek across Norway to save Inga and Prince Haakon from invading forces during the Norwegian Civil War. Find the photos while skiing around the 2 km Bunny Trail and guess where in Winter Park they were.
